1. CYCLE FESTIVAL:
Launch, St James Square 11am to 4pm 14 September. Road Haulage Association will be present to
promote cycle & HGV awareness. It is hoped that Robert Flello MP, chair of all Party Parliamentary
Group on Transport will attend. Gazebo & facilies will be provided. Cycling Cinema is on Saturday 28
September in Seaclose Park. Marquee should be paid for. Cyclists are neede to power 12 bikes for the
duration of film. Film choice poll is underway on CW website: ET is favourite film at the moment.
2. IW COUNCIL + CYCLE FORUM :
1 October at 6pm at IWF&RS HQ is next forum. Councillor John Medland will be present and has asked
for proposals for cycling schemes to lead on from current schemes. Less than two years are left of the
LSTF funding. A replacement for Rachel Mills is being selected. One suggestion is a closed Criterion
route. CB suggested Smallbrook Stadium could be hired.
VGL said the priority remains to complete the east west cycle route through Newport, making the route
22/23 cross layout. Others took the view that improvements within Newport, Ryde etc were needed to
get more people using bikes.
TT will contact people to ask them to come to the forum & to bring ideas: a three minute slot for each to
be made in agenda for this. Vectis Roads, Wight Triathlon, Just4Fun, John Allen, Louis Gray, other
cycling clubs, would be approached. ****TT****
To be held on Friday 29 November at Newport C of E. Suggestions: Replacement LSTF person. Mr
Tibbutt junior. My Journey ( www .myjourneysouthampton.com ). Wiggle.
4. CYCLING IN COWES:
Cowes Town Council is considering illegal cycling in the town, and the possibility of an official route is
sought. Councillor John Nicholson has approached AL for suggestions to help cycling, both for Cowes
High street, and for north Cowes which is his constituency. Ideas follow, but are work in progress. Talk to
Ice Cream Parlour owner.
# Birmingham Road 2-way scheme was considered in the past but there was a lot of opposition. The
bottleneck at Shooters Hill is not eliminated. (Keep looking for suggestions) # Cycle parking at Red
Funnel should be improved. # Although specifically for cyclists the pavement should be widened on the
north side of the High Street opposite the optician & butcher (using parking area). # The Medham track
connecting Northwood to the cycle track should be properly surfaced. # 20mph limit on Palance Road.
# There is provisionally a Wayfarers meeting on Friday 1 November. Subject to agreement by Andy
Newman, Nick Farthing (Sustrans) and/or Gian Giblett could be invited to explain about the Gunville
Greenway. Sustrans have completed and documented an initial survey of a route from the centre to the
edge of Newport, linking the north south cycleroute to a possible future route to West Wight.
# The Isle of Wight Local Access Forum is established by the IW Council, pursuant to the Countryside
and Rights of Way Act. Its role is to provide advice regarding public access while having regard to the
needs of land managements and conservation. AL applied for membership and was accepted for a
period of three years. The next meeting is on 12 September.
# The next QTP Transport Users Group meeting is on 17 September 10am at Seaclose.
