Update 30 04 2026

Campaigning > Cyclewight Latest News
Dear Members,
We have written to every candidate for the upcoming local election and asked them for their views on Active Travel.  At the present time we have received 19 replies. You can read them here. You can find out who your candidates are from this link here. Please do contact them about cycling to show it is a topic that really matters. You may well see that some of the candidates did not provide their home address. We wrote to all of their parties and asked for our letter to be forwarded to them.

The Medina Greenway is closed at the moment due to erosion of part of the path. It is hoped to re-open it as soon as possible with a temporary fix while a long term solution is sought.
We met with the Project Officer for the Island Green Link recently and looked at all of the route, and the various actions being taken. As we know, the section from Station Road in Wootton to Belmont Lane has been resurfaced. There has been a structural survey carried out on the bridge there and the good news is that it is in good order. The reports on the tarmac surface of the Wootton section however have not all been positive, some feeling the surface is inappropriate for a rural area and not particularly good for horses. We did raise this and there will be no common surface on the route but each section’s surface will be considered suitable for that particular section.
The other clear sign of work being carried out on the route is the crossing at Afton, by the nursery, which has more or less passed all its various hurdles for work to begin. In some places, where the path crosses roads, the solution will be changing the speed limit on the road. This does involve a traffic regulation order which does take up to a year to complete!  The other issue in several places is the presence of badgers.
Great Park outside of Newport has always been an issue but the Green Link team hope to meet with new owners in the not too distant future to seek their views and hopefully obtain their support of the project.  Finally the crossing of Kite Hill!!!!! Several alternative plans have been drawn up and are now with Island Roads for comment. Please do raise any issues you have with us to pass on. We do hope to be more involved as the scheme moves forward.
Newport Day is coming up and is on the 30th May 10.00 -16.00 in Victoria Rec, Newport. Please find a poster attached with more details. We will be there with our Wider for the Rider banner as well as helping people with advice on cycling.
Last week we published a map of all the roadworks on the Island on Facebook. It got a huge response. Many people decided to follow us from that one post. We were making the point that using a bike is often better than using a car. The map of closures can be found by using the website https://one.network/. It is very useful for finding where they are and can be set to dates in the future.
