Update 11 02 2024
Campaigning > Cyclewight Latest Update
Dear Members,
Island Roads have announced their annual survey of people’s view on their service. It may not surprise you there is no mention of cycling at all. There is a section near the end where there is space to comment. Please do so. Maintenance of the cycleways (Merstone, Alverstone, Wootton, Freshwater) is inadequate. The survey is open to the end of the month, 29th Feb. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/IslandRoads2024
We have heard back from Isle of Wight Council over Blackwater. "In respect of planned maintenance the drainage works (as a Council funded capital scheme) at the section of the route just east of Blackwater Road are programmed to commence on 15 April and shall coincide with the resurfacing through to Birchmore Lane.” It's getting closer.
We have also had a reply back about about the Island Green Link. They are awaiting final approval of the revised plans from HMG. They have appointed a Lead Officer for the project. We have reiterated the parts of the project we would like to be given precedence. We will try to arrange a meeting as soon as possible.
Parkthatbike. This is the organisation that helps provide cycle parking. Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council are willing to support this initiative. Well done to them. Are you in the area and need parking provision for your customers, employees or users? Would you like financial support? Do let us know.
Bembridge. You may well have read about the situation in Bembridge about trying to achieve greater public access. CycleWight have been in contact with various people and Councillors about the plans to ensure they include cycling. The LCWIP for the East Wight area (Bembridge Brading and St Helens’) is providing a real boon. At present it is not part of Council policy but it should be soon and this means future developments will have to take cycling and walking into consideration. We are planning to meet Councillors again from that area in the near future.
Finally do not forget about our Kidical Mass ride mentioned in the last briefing. Please keep Saturday morning 16th March free for you, your children and grandchildren etc. More details here.
